Step into the secluded tropical gardens of the Civil War-era West Martello Towers. Stroll the brick pathways through graceful, arched courtyards and lush, colorful foliage to discover a rare collection of seductive native and exotic plants.
There are numerous gardens to see within the overall West Martello site, as well as the Fort ruins themselves. Plan on giving yourself time to look at the history of the Fort and the Gardens (inside the Old Fort, next to Reception) to better understand the garden and its historic spaces.
Then plan on visiting each of the individual gardens by following the map, spending time with the butterflies in the Butterfly Garden, walking amongst the native wildflowers on top of the hill overlooking the beach, or taking in the aromas of the inner courtyard Perfume Garden. Don’t forget to marvel at the glorious orchids in two arbors in the Courtyard!
There is a restroom onsite, near the Butterfly Garden. Numerous benches and lovely places to rest can be found throughout the gardens.
Most of the garden is wheelchair and stroller accessible for your safety and convenience.
Animals are not permitted in the Garden unless they are Certified service animals.
Personal-use photography, painting, reading, or even enjoying your lunch, are encouraged! …and do post your great photos on social media to let others know about our Tropical oasis!
Refill your water bottle at drinking water fountains located inside the fort and near the restrooms. If you don’t have a water bottle, you can purchase one in our wonderful shop.
As we are so close to the pier, beaches and many hotels, we encourage you to bike or walk to the gardens; but if you need to drive, free parking is available just outside the Gardens. The beach is right nearby, as well as a few restaurants and cafes so make a day of it!
The Gardens are a 7-minute walk from the Flagler and Grinnell St public bus stop.
Taxi’s, Uber and Lyft all operate in Key West. Key West has taxi cab companies that service the entire island. Air-conditioned cars and vans are also available.
If you need to transport your bicycle, request a cab with a bike rack. The dispatcher at the largest cab companies can be reached at
Key Lime taxi
If you are taking the Old Towne Hop on Hop Off tourist tram, it passes right in front of the Gardens!
